Fans of SEC football would have never even pondered this question 10 years ago. But then again, that was TEN YEARS AGO! Tennessee head coach Philip Fulmer certainly has some good credentials.
That of course including a BCS national championship. I know, they won Saturday… but it was at home against Northern Illinois. And keep in mind, NIU beat UT in almost every statistical category.
But all this 2008 stuff aside, when was the last time the Volunteers were a legitimate national contender going in the final month of the regular season?
2001… when they lost to LSU in the SEC championship putting them at 10-2. (Would finish 11-2.) They also would lose to Auburn in the 2004 SEC championship. (Auburn was undefeated and didn’t get to play for the nat’l title so UT wasn’t legit even if they won that.)
When the bad seasons are beginning to noticably outnumber the good ones, it begins to make you wonder if it’s time to make a change at the top. And I don’t have to be in Knoxville to know that’s being discussed more frequently.
