More than just Pride in Saturday’s RRR

When OU and Texas go head-to-head Saturday in their annual “Red River Rivalry” game, there’s much at stake. And this time, it’s more than just the top spot in the Big 12 spot.

With the strength of the Big 12 in 2008, the winner of this game could very easily go on to play for the national title. It’s a high-stakes showdown between two of the best offenses in college football.

Recent history always seems to favor the higher ranked team going into it, in this case, #1 Oklahoma. 8 out of the last 10 times the higher ranked team has won. Sooner fans must be feeling pretty good about that.

This game will come down to who can make some stops defensively. Oklahoma is the only one that’s played a top 25 team so far in 2008. But TCU was ranked because of their exceptional defense, not offense.

The loser of this game isn’t necessarily out of the national title hunt considering Texas Tech is a force in the Big 12 south as well. So now this conference gets to see what it’s like when playing some of the best teams week in and week out can actually hurt as much as it can help their hopes of a national championship.
